A Misanthropist's Heaven Awaits
Lockwood has just moved to a quiet farmhouse called Thrushcross Grange. He likes it because it is far away from busy towns. One day he walks up the windy hills to meet his landlord, Heathcliff. Heathcliff lives in a very old stone house called Wuthering Heights. The name comes from the wild wind that blows there all the time. The trees bend sideways because the wind is so strong! Heathcliff is a mysterious man with dark eyes and a grumpy face. He does not smile much or say many nice words. Inside his house there are big wooden chairs, shiny dishes, and lots of dogs. The dogs get excited and jump on Lockwood, but a kind woman from the kitchen shoos them away. Even though Heathcliff is not very friendly, Lockwood feels curious about him. He wants to learn more about this strange place and its quiet owner. So he decides to visit again tomorrow.

A Cold Welcome and Strange Company
Lockwood was sitting by his warm fire when a maid came in to clean. She made so much dust that he had to leave! So he walked four long miles through the snow to visit Wuthering Heights again. When he got there, no one wanted to let him in. The gate was stuck and no one answered the door for a very long time. Finally a young man helped him get inside the big kitchen.
Inside he met a young woman with pretty golden hair. She did not smile or say kind things. A grumpy young man named Hareton was there too. Heathcliff came in and they all ate dinner together, but no one was very friendly. Lockwood made some mistakes and said the wrong things, which made everyone cross. When he wanted to go home, the snow was falling so hard he could not see! The dogs knocked him down and he bumped his nose. A kind helper named Zillah took care of him and let him stay the night in that strange, unfriendly house.
The rest is waiting.
