Chapter 1

A Misanthropist's Heaven Awaits

Lockwood has just moved to a quiet farmhouse called Thrushcross Grange. He likes it because it is far away from busy towns. One day he walks up the windy hills to meet his landlord, Heathcliff. Heathcliff lives in a very old stone house called Wuthering Heights. The name comes from the wild wind that blows there all the time. The trees bend sideways because the wind is so strong! Heathcliff is a mysterious man with dark eyes and a grumpy face. He does not smile much or say many nice words. Inside his house there are big wooden chairs, shiny dishes, and lots of dogs. The dogs get excited and jump on Lockwood, but a kind woman from the kitchen shoos them away. Even though Heathcliff is not very friendly, Lockwood feels curious about him. He wants to learn more about this strange place and its quiet owner. So he decides to visit again tomorrow.

A Cold Welcome and Strange Company

Lockwood was sitting by his warm fire when a maid came in to clean. She made so much dust that he had to leave! So he walked four long miles through the snow to visit Wuthering Heights again. When he got there, no one wanted to let him in. The gate was stuck and no one answered the door for a very long time. Finally a young man helped him get inside the big kitchen.

Inside he met a young woman with pretty golden hair. She did not smile or say kind things. A grumpy young man named Hareton was there too. Heathcliff came in and they all ate dinner together, but no one was very friendly. Lockwood made some mistakes and said the wrong things, which made everyone cross. When he wanted to go home, the snow was falling so hard he could not see! The dogs knocked him down and he bumped his nose. A kind helper named Zillah took care of him and let him stay the night in that strange, unfriendly house.

Lockwood was taken to a secret room in the old house. The servant said the master did not like anyone sleeping there. Inside was a cozy wooden bed built like a little cabinet. Lockwood crawled in and closed the panels tight. On the window ledge he found old books covered in writing. One name was scratched everywhere: Catherine Earnshaw. Sometimes it said Catherine Heathcliff or Catherine Linton. He read her diary from long ago. Catherine wrote about missing her father and feeling sad. She wrote about playing on the wild moors with her friend Heathcliff. That night Lockwood had strange dreams. In one dream he heard a sad voice at the window. It called out to be let inside. When Heathcliff rushed in and heard about the voice, he became very upset. He ran to the window calling for Cathy with tears on his face. In the morning Lockwood walked home through the snow, but he could not stop wondering about the old house and who Catherine really was.

Nelly Dean Begins Her Tale

Lockwood was staying at a big house called Thrushcross Grange. He thought he wanted to be alone, but he felt lonely. So he asked the kind housekeeper, Nelly Dean, to come talk with him. At first she only gave short answers, but soon she started to share stories about the people at Wuthering Heights. She explained that the families there were all connected in surprising ways. Lockwood wanted to hear more, so Nelly began to tell her tale.

Long ago, when Nelly was young, she worked at Wuthering Heights. One day, old Earnshaw walked all the way to a faraway city. He came home with a little boy he had found who had no family and nowhere to go. The Earnshaw children, Hindley and Cathy, were not happy at first because their father had lost their presents on the long trip home. They named the boy Heathcliff. Little Cathy soon became his friend, but Hindley did not like him at all. Heathcliff was quiet and brave, and Earnshaw grew to love him very much.

At Wuthering Heights, Earnshaw grew old and tired. He used to walk on the wild moors, but now he sat by the fire. He felt cross and grumpy much of the time. He loved Heathcliff very much and wanted everyone to be kind to him. Hindley went away to school, so the house felt calmer.

Catherine was a lively girl with bright eyes and a sweet smile. She loved to sing, laugh, and play all day long. She and Heathcliff were the very best of friends. They did everything together and hated to be apart.

One quiet October evening, Earnshaw sat by the fire. A big wind blew outside. Catherine leaned against her father and sang softly to him. He fell asleep listening to her gentle song. When they tried to wake him, they found he had peacefully slipped away. Catherine and Heathcliff held each other close that night. They whispered together about beautiful, happy places far away.

Hindley came home for his father's sad goodbye. He brought a big surprise with him. He had a new wife! No one knew anything about her. She was sweet and liked the old farmhouse very much. She loved the big fireplace and the shiny dishes. But she seemed a little bit scared of sad things.

Hindley became the boss of the house now. He was not very kind. He made Heathcliff work hard on the farm. He would not let Heathcliff learn his lessons anymore. But Cathy stayed friends with Heathcliff no matter what. They played on the wild moors together whenever they could. They did not care if they got in trouble.

One rainy night, they ran off to peek at a fancy house. They saw rich children inside fighting over a little dog. A big dog hurt Cathy's ankle, so the people inside helped her. But they were not nice to Heathcliff. They sent him away into the rain all alone.

Cathy's Transformation and Heathcliff's Humiliation

Cathy came back to Wuthering Heights after five weeks away. Her ankle was all better now. She looked so different in her fancy new dress and pretty hat with a feather. Her hair was curled in soft brown ringlets. Hindley said she looked like a real lady now.

Heathcliff had been very lonely while Cathy was gone. His clothes were dirty and his hair was tangled because nobody helped him take care of himself. When Cathy saw him, she gave him lots of hugs and kisses. But then she laughed at how messy he looked. This hurt his feelings very much. He felt embarrassed and ran away.

That night, kind Nelly found Heathcliff in the stable. The next morning, he let her help him get cleaned up and look nice. She told him wonderful stories about how special he might be. But Hindley was mean to Heathcliff and sent him to his room all day. Sweet Cathy missed him so much that she climbed across the roof just to visit him and keep him company.

A baby boy named Hareton was born at Wuthering Heights on a sunny June morning. Everyone was so happy to meet him! But sadly, his mother Frances was very sick. She loved her baby so much and dreamed of watching him grow up. When Frances passed away, her husband Hindley became very, very sad. He stopped taking care of things around the house, so kind Nelly looked after baby Hareton instead.

Catherine grew into a lively girl of fifteen. A gentle boy named Edgar Linton started coming to visit her. Catherine liked Edgar, but she also cared deeply about Heathcliff. One day, Heathcliff felt hurt because Catherine was spending more time with Edgar. He showed her marks he had made counting the days. Catherine got upset and said unkind words. Later, she and Edgar talked about their feelings and realized they liked each other very much. When Hindley came home that evening, everyone hurried off to bed.

That evening, things were very hard at the house. Hindley was acting wild and scary because he had been drinking, so Nelly hid little Hareton in the kitchen to keep him safe. Hindley found them and got very angry, but Nelly stayed brave. Then something frightening happened on the stairs, and little Hareton almost got hurt. But Heathcliff was there just in time and caught him, keeping him safe.

Later, Catherine came to talk with Nelly by the warm fire. She shared a big secret. Edgar Linton had asked her to marry him, and she said yes. But Catherine's heart felt confused. She cared about Edgar, but she felt something much deeper for Heathcliff. She said her heart and Heathcliff's were the same, like they belonged together. Sadly, Heathcliff only heard part of what she said and felt very hurt. He left without a word and disappeared into a big storm. Catherine searched and waited in the rain all night, but he was gone. She got very sick afterward. When she got better, she moved to a new house called Thrushcross Grange. Three years later, she married Edgar, and Nelly went to live there too.

Then one quiet evening, something surprising happened. Heathcliff came back! He had been gone for three whole years. He looked very different now, tall and strong and well-dressed. Catherine was so excited to see her old friend again. She could hardly believe he was really there. Edgar was not so happy about the visit. Heathcliff moved into Wuthering Heights nearby. He came to visit Catherine often. Edgar's young sister Isabella started to like Heathcliff very much. Catherine tried to warn her that Heathcliff was not a kind person. But Isabella would not listen. Nelly works at a big house called the Grange, but she often thinks about another house on the windy moors called Wuthering Heights. One cold sunny day, she walks past an old stone post by the road. It makes her remember being little, when she and her friend Hindley played there. They used to hide snail shells and pebbles in a hole near the stone. The memory feels so real that she hurries to Wuthering Heights to visit.

At the gate, she finds a little boy named Hareton. He used to be her sweet baby to care for, but now he acts rough and says unkind words. A man named Heathcliff has been teaching him bad manners. Nelly feels worried and goes back to the Grange. She wants to keep everyone there safe and happy. But troubles are growing between the people who live there. Catherine and her husband Edgar have a big argument about Heathcliff visiting. Everyone feels upset and hurt. The house grows very quiet and sad, with people keeping to their own rooms.

She kept thinking about when she was a little girl, running free on the windy hills with her friend Heathcliff. She missed those happy days so much.

Edgar came to see Catherine and felt very worried about her. She was so confused and tired. Nelly went to get the doctor to help. While she was outside, she learned something surprising. Edgar's sister Isabella had run away during the night with Heathcliff. Edgar felt so sad about his sister leaving. Now the house felt even quieter, with Catherine sick in bed and Isabella gone far away.

For two whole months, no one knew where Heathcliff and Isabella had gone. During that time, Catherine became very, very sick. Edgar loved her so much that he stayed by her side day and night. He helped take care of her and never left her alone. The doctor said Catherine might not get better, but Edgar would not give up hope. Slowly, she started to feel a little bit stronger.

One bright March morning, Edgar put pretty yellow flowers on Catherine's pillow. When she woke up and saw them, her eyes sparkled with happiness. She held the flowers close and thought about the wild moors she loved so much. Edgar moved her to a sunny room so she could feel better and rest.

Far away at Wuthering Heights, Isabella sent a letter about her new life. She wrote that she felt lonely and sad in that cold, dusty old house. She missed her home and wished things were different.

Instead, Nelly had to tell her that Edgar would not write. Isabella felt very alone and wished she could go back to her old life. Nelly waited for the right moment to give Catherine a letter from Heathcliff. She opened all the doors on a warm morning and sent the helper away. Catherine sat by the window in a white dress. Her long hair was combed softly around her face. She looked pale and dreamy, like someone far away in thought. Nelly read the letter out loud, and when Catherine heard Heathcliff's name, her eyes brightened. Then Heathcliff himself walked right into the room. He rushed to Catherine and held her tight for a long time. They were so happy to see each other, but also very sad. Catherine felt hurt and scared they might be apart forever. She told him she never wanted to let go. They held each other and cried together. When Edgar came home, Heathcliff gently gave Catherine to him because she had fallen asleep from all the big feelings. Heathcliff promised to come back the next day to check on her.

Edgar was heartbroken and stayed by Catherine's side all night. In the morning, soft light came through the window. Catherine looked so peaceful, like she was having the sweetest dream. Everyone in the house felt very quiet and sad. Heathcliff had been waiting outside under an old tree all night long. When he heard the news, he felt so sad he could barely speak. He missed Catherine with all his heart. A few days later, Catherine was buried in a pretty spot near the moors she loved. Wildflowers and heather grew all around, and the wind blew softly from the hills.

There had been a terrible fight at the old house, and she had to get away. After getting warm and dry, Isabella left that very day. Later, she had a baby boy named Linton. Edgar took care of little Cathy, and she became the joy of his life. He loved her so much. Sadly, Hindley passed away, and Heathcliff took over Wuthering Heights. From her window, she could see golden rocks far away on the hills. She dreamed of visiting a magical place called Fairy Cave.

One summer day, when her father was away, Cathy went exploring. She pretended to be a merchant on an adventure with her pony and dogs. She rode and rode until she found an old farmhouse called Wuthering Heights. There she met a boy named Hareton, who turned out to be her cousin. Cathy was surprised because he seemed so different from her. They did not become friends that day, but Cathy's world had grown much bigger.

He looked very tired from the long trip. When he woke up, he seemed shy and a little tearful. He missed his mother very much. Catherine wanted to make him feel better. Heathcliff warned them to stay apart, but something was changing inside him.

Nelly found him standing at the open door. His eyes had a strange glad sparkle. He told her he felt like he was close to heaven now. After that, Heathcliff grew very tired and weak. He stopped eating and spent his time thinking about Catherine, the person he loved most. He seemed to be dreaming of being with her again. One rainy night, he fell into a deep, peaceful sleep and did not wake up. They buried him next to Catherine, just as he wished. When people walked by the quiet graves in the churchyard, soft wind moved through the grass. Moths danced among the flowers. Everything felt calm and still.
